2002, SANTA FE COMMUNITY COLLEGE
Since 1997, this popular series of classes have been taught by ADC
Referral, an organization of Santa Fe architects and builders dedicated
to helping New Mexicans achieve excellent design that is both ecological
and affordable. Classes are coordinated by Robin Dorrell, founder
of ADC Referral, and taught at Santa Fe Community College. ADC (Architects,
Designers & Contractors Referral Service) was organized by local
architects and builders so the public would have a helpful and educational
way to meet relevant firms for their projects.
WATER
HARVESTING - NEW CLASS

OCTOBER 8TH, 2002 - TUESDAY, 6:00 - 9:00 pm, 1 night |
This
class will review both active and passive methods of water harvesting.
Active methods include grey/black water processes and roof water harvesting
with associated cistern/pump systems. Passive methods include retention
ponds, pumice wicks, french drains, trenching/dry stream beds to utilize
water directly from roof and ground run-off. Drip irrigation, wetlands
and filtering systems will be addressed. A discussion of the pros
and cons of the different harvesting methods will highlight variables
in costs as well as degrees of construction difficulty. Recommendations
for water harvesting consultants will also be offered.

GREAT SOUTHWESTERN DESIGN IN AN ENERGY EFFICIENT HOME

Using
slides from New Mexico and around the world, architects will familiarize
you first with how mass and massing, light
and shadow, layering of space, texture,
indoor-outdoor space, and color
all contribute to achieving architecture that has an enduring appeal.
You will learn how various architectural elements
contribute to energy efficiency, cost reduction and maximizing space
utilization. Sample sets of construction drawings will be reviewed
to illustrate the level of drawing detail needed to insure good communication
between owner, architect and builder. A discussion of the variety
of services architects offer and how they interact with the client
and builder will be included.

ALTERNATIVE BUILDING METHODS

Learn the pros and cons of different building methods before you begin
designing your new home or building. This slide show will identify
which wall types are the most fire resistant, energy efficient, easiest
to build, least toxic, and most affordable. Contractors will discuss
the advantages of adobe, rastra, reward, cempo, straw bale, straw
clay, pumice, and stud wall construction. You'll learn about the elements
used to create an energy efficient house and which building methods
lend themselves to which architectural styles.

STRAWBALE BUILDING

Straw
bale construction has excellent fire-resistant qualities as well as
the best r-value rating compared to other wall systems. With
the help of videos and slides, established straw bale builders and
architects will review building methods and technique, possible architectural
styles, energy efficiency, permit requirements and financing.

is the Chinese/Asian practice that promotes good energy flow or
"chi" in the built environment to improve quality of life.
Maxine Rae Kyser, who has studied with feng shui masters in Malaysia,
will cover such topics as "What is feng shui and what are the
different types? What can it do for me? How can I incorporate it
effectively, efficiently and aesthetically into new design work,
renovation or decorating projects? Ho do I choose the best feng
shui practitioner for me?" This class will include many useful,
practical and immediately applicable insider tips on how you can
make the most of feng shui in your building.
